Dial printing woes on large silent clock

Steve, I am encountering a strange printing glitch on the white layers on the large silent clock: namely the white layers print smoothly until the last few layers where it develops what might best be described as a wrinkled appearance between 8-12 oclock and between 3-6 oclock...tried twice with two different white filaments to same result...using your recommended printer settings but with the change from 5 to 4 perimeters...wonder if you have any ideas on what might be the cause? thanks Mike

I printed it and it came out perfect on my Prusa MK3 I did not the change the settings in Pruse slicer for PLA.

well, full print failed even tho test was ok...prusa tech support suspects the piece is shifting slightly near the end and suggested a higher bed temp and thorough cleaning of bed to address that, sigh

Those are symptoms of a corner lifting and pushing into the print head. This is often a problem on square blocks since the corners pull from two directions. Round cylinders are much less likely to lift since the lifting force is distributed evenly around the perimeter. The dial approximates a cylinder. The small extending tabs might lift on their own, but usually stop at the dial.

Here is the top surface of a part with corner lifting. It is designed 10mm thick, but the corner is only 9.6mm thick because of lifting during the final few layers. The part was lifted into the nozzle while the nozzle was trying to add even more. The top layer gets pushed around resulting in a wavy surface. There is a bulge where some of the PLA gets pushed over the edge.

The real proof of lifting during the print shows up on the bottom layer. There will be a line showing the portion that remained attached until the end.

No idea. There is nothing special about the dial. It is just a large flat surface above infill. Sometimes the first solid layer has some drooping that smooths out after a few more solid layers.

The same effect happened on two different filament spools, so I would try looking for something that has changed on your printer. Maybe a loose belt or pulley.

I did run a cylinder test. actually 2 of them...the first one showed the same problem as did the dial. For the second test I changed the infill top from monotonic with lines to just monotonic, and that print was perfect...so am trying the dial again with that change.

Interesting. Monotonic lines seems to be a new mode. Not sure what makes it fail or why they needed to add the new mode. At least you may have found a workaround.
